Energy and real estate companies from Calgary are heading to China to promote the city as a global energy centre.

Calgary Economic Development (CED) on Thursday announced the June 24-28 trip that will specifically focus on promoting investment opportunity in oil and gas and real estate businesses.

Mayor Naheed Nenshi led a similar trip in May 2011 with a group of more than 70 people representing various businesses, mostly from the energy and finance sectors.

They spent about a week meeting with important contacts and politicians in Beijing and Shanghai.

This time, the group with representatives from 20 Calgary-based companies, will go to Hong Kong and Beijing, where they will attend Euromoney’s inaugural Canada — China Investors Forum.

Premier Alison Redford, who’s also on a mission trip to Asia next week, will deliver a keynote address at the conference.

John Hankins, vice-president of CED for investment and trade development, said China continues to play a major role in the global economy and certainly has had an impact in Alberta, as evidenced by the $20 billion of recent investment from Asia into shale gas and oilsands development.

“In addition to promoting the energy-related investment opportunities in Alberta, we want to highlight the developments on the real estate side,” he said.

Calgary was recently ranked tops among 33 leading cities by the Investment Property Databank (IPD) index for “best return on investment,” said Hankins.

“This is the story we are coming to China to tell,” he said.

The IPD is an international organization that analyzes real-estate performance across the globe.

John Zahary, president and CEO of Sunshine Oilsands, said his company has directly benefited from investors in Hong Kong, China and Southeast Asia.

“The 2012 Calgary-China investment symposium provides a unique opportunity for investors from Hong Kong and mainland China to connect directly with Calgary oil and gas and real estate companies currently seeking investment to their companies’ in one of the world’s leading economies,” he said.
